A friend of mine I hadn't seen for a while was visiting town the other night, and he said that he had been reading my blog from time to time. He told me this: Many years ago, he went to see Miles Davis. In the band were four keyboardists. Davis played, only occasionally, a red horn. On the set list were Cyndi Lauper and Michael Jackson covers. "Is this Advanced?" he asked me.This is as Advanced as it gets.

incredible. i'm revelling. i really enjoy the red horn detail, that adds another level the Advancedness of this story, and makes Davis seem even more enigmatic, while he is obviously trying to be less so. or is he? brilliant!

You should look into Wilco's "Less Than You Think". I have a feeling it may be advanced.
Everything Wilco does is, by nature, overt.
i don't know, i think the new wilco album might be hovering around advancement. i mean, getting called adult contemporary and and getting compared to the eagles while having avant-technicians like cline and kotche in your band reeks a little of advancement to me. plus there's that chuck klosterman profile where tweedy says he likes jet, because they're (paraphrasing) "rock n' roll music".
which is overt, not advanced because nothing that tweedy has done has qualified for the type of genius needed to Advance.
i'm not saying tweedy could "never advance," but it would take a lot of evidence to convince me. that said, i have not heard the new album, so you may be have a decent case. when i made the "everything wilco does is by nature overt," comment, i was being a bit of an ass. but jeff tweedy always seems as if he's trying so hard to make music that pushes the envelope or whatever... on purpose. to self-aware to truly "advance," imo.

'yankee hotel foxtrot', with all its pretension, bells, and whistles, is the height of being overt (also an album i really love). i think that the new album might change your mind about tweedy's advancement, though. i know i didn't like it at first, which to me was a sure sign of advancement.
that said, i'm not sure it's the flight into the mystery of advancement. there's a huge difference (sonically, structurally, in terms of subject and style) between, say, lou reed on the third VU album and lou reed on 'the blue mask'. i'm not sure i can say the same for the difference between this new album and like, early wilco stuff. it could well be just be a retread masquerading as an advance.
yeah, i enjoy yankee hotel foxtrot a whole lot in the winter months in minnesota. but the only way Wilco could be considered advanced now after foxtrot is to come out with either a full on pop country album (this is not overt because they have already pulled the "alt country" genre off [see uncle tupelo, billy bragg and wilco, a.m]) or a blues standards album covering Muddy Waters, Robert Johnson, Son House, and done with authentic Delta blues greats (perhaps with ex-new orleans residents).
How about a "Boy Band" type album (a la NSync or whatever)? That might be advanced.
i really like the pop country idea. a duet with faith hill seems extremely advanced.
